Bachelor of Biomedical Science(本科)專(zhuān)業(yè)概況
This course offers you a high degree of flexibility with the option to select one major and two minor areas of study. This provides you with the opportunity to explore areas that interest you as well as developing knowledge and skills in areas of emerging priority and employment. You may also complete studies in complementary disciplines from across the university including law, business, engineering, or innovation and entrepreneurship.
You will be taught by leading researchers from the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, the Translational Research Institute and partner research facilities at major Brisbane hospitals. In recent years, QUT researchers have made ground breaking discoveries in cancer biology, infectious diseases, tissue engineering and vaccine development.
You will have the opportunity to gain real experience through a supervised work placement in an industry, clinical or research-oriented workplace.
Develop practical training by participating in laboratory classes held in state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories. Every unit in this course includes a laboratory component so you can develop and practise key technical skills, explore real experiments and case studies, and learn in an environment that stimulates collaboration and advanced thinking processes.
You will graduate as a critical thinker who can develop your own innovative ideas and successfully implement these through a range of clinical, research and industry-based careers.
Study areas
Anatomical sciences—Build practical skills in histology, medical image interpretation, and organ identification. Examine real examples using QUT’s extensive skeletal collection, film library, pathology museum and human cadavers. You will have the opportunity to perform a dissection at the Medical Engineering Research Facility, developing critical surgical skills and an appreciation of anatomical variability, pathology and effective medical communication.
Cell and molecular biotechnology—Learn about the structure, function and properties of cells and how cells are regulated and can be manipulated at the genetic and molecular levels. Study the interactions between deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) and the resulting protein biosynthesis, and develop laboratory capabilities for cell molecular biotechnology careers.
Human biochemistry—Study the structure, function and properties of biomolecules (proteins, lipids, sugars, and DNA) and the molecular machinery that regulates the everyday workings of healthy cells and tissues in the human body, the molecular basis of human diseases, and how diagnostic technologies and treatment strategies impact on biochemical processes in the cellular context. You will undertake a research project in a mentored problem-based learning environment.
Human physiology—Knowledge about the human body and how its systems work to maintain our health is essential for understanding the basis of health, disease, diagnostic technologies and treatments. You will critically design and undertake a laboratory-based research project in human physiology. High-achieving students have the opportunity to align their studies with a clinical physiology minor, which incorporates a 400 hour professional internship.
Infection and immunity—Human infectious diseases account for more than 25 per cent of deaths and debilitating illnesses globally, representing a huge financial and social impact on our health and wellbeing. Infectious disease agents include bacteria, viruses, yeasts, fungi, and parasites. You will develop in-depth knowledge of these agents by exploring their biology at the cellular and molecular levels and how they cause human disease, together with cutting-edge strategies of diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention.
